Humanism, as a worldview and guide to conduct is characterised by moral values, such as compassion, responsibility and respect for the individual, compatible with the rights of others. Such are not derived from science. Having said that, Science is an imperative that pervades every aspect of life, a basis around which the rational life - stance of humanism can thrive.

Respectfully reblogged from Pigliucci’s 'Plato’s Footnote'. Historically, an accommodationist was a believer who, like William Buckland (Dean of Westminster), or the Free Church of Scotland theologian, Henry Drummond, sought to accommodate their interpretation of their faith to scientific discoveries. More recently, the term has been used to refer to those who neglect to challenge religion while expounding science, a neglect that some consider sinful.

Science (from the Latin scientia, meaning 'knowledge') usually describes the effort to understand how the universe works through the scientific method, with observable repeatable evidence as the basis of that understanding; a way of understanding the world through thought and experimentation, with trial and error ecountered along the way. In their approach to the search for truth and knowledge, the sciences demand peer review in authenticating its discoveries.

Historically and also in common use, the word 'science' is often used as a shorthand for the science of natural phenomena, but other recognised science fields are social, behavioural, applied and formal in their remit. 'Science' may refer to any knowledge which has been reduced to an algorithmic system, not requiring the need for an indescribable skill or mastery, such as is evident in fine art.

Disciplines referred to as 'science':

  • Natural science uses the scientific method to study the universe.
  • Social science uses the scientific method to study society.
  • Formal science uses the scientific method to establish rules, logic, and formal systems of information.
