Gaza testimony, Dr Yasser Khan
photo supplied by Dr Yasser Khan There is only one functional hospital remaining in the Gaza strip, the European Hospital in Khan Younis. Dr. Yasser Khan, a Canadian ophthalmologist and plastic surgeon, recently came back from Gaza where he spent ten days at the hospital performing eye surgeries on victims of Israeli attacks. It was his second medical mission to Gaza since the war began last October and following his return, he was interviewed by Jeremy Scahill for the INTERCEPT. The Intercept are investigative journalists who work to expose injustice, corruption and abuse of power. “We see journalism as an instrument of civic action. We’re here to change the world, not just describe it.” If the mainstream media shared such an article, or interviewed Dr. Yasser Khan on TV, his testimony would increase the global call for a permanent ceasefire. The world is changing slowly, but too slowly for the 40,000 + people killed or dead under the rubble, or the 100,000 children, women and men maimed, blinded, orphaned and traumatised for life. There is little hope for anyone who is injured in Gaza. With next to no access to hospitals or medicine, the situation is catastrophic for everyone. I had to visit a local hospital in Scotland recently and as I walked towards the main entrance, I couldn’t imagine how any hospital, anywhere, could be bombed. Targeting hospitals is, for obvious reasons, a war-crime and yet, Israel is going even further. They are obliterating hospitals in Gaza and soldiers are invading the buildings and committing countless atrocities on the stranded patients, families seeking shelter and medical staff. This is not a war. This is genocide and the legal term ‘plausible genocide’, used by the International Court of Justice earlier this year, fails to acknowledge the urgency of the situation. The mass-murder of civilians is happening every day. There is nothing plausible about it. Dr Khan’s eyewitness account is harrowing but I urge you to read and share. This is not about sides. This is a humanitarian disaster and it can be stopped by global action. The least we can do is not look away.
